Beyond Words
I’m Josephine Earley. Welcome to my website! I’m very excited to share my art with you! 2020 was an incredibly challenging year and behind each challenge, there is a lesson. The year helped me focus on what’s important. My peace of mind is essential and painting helps get me there. It also taught me that time is of the essence and to go for the dreams you have. If not now, then when? I am committed to doing what I love and that’s expressing myself through my art.
Bio
A little bit about my background and the reason my website name is Pina Earley. I was born in Italy and came to New York when I was five. I learned to speak English quickly, however, it was difficult living in a household where only Italian was spoken. Art helped me communicate my thoughts and emotions when words couldn’t. After a family trip to Italy in high school, I fell in love with Italian fashion and pursued fashion design in college. I studied abroad in Italy to pursue my passion and learned illustration and design. I also had the opportunity to work with an amazing photographer that inspired me to learn photography. After college, working in New York City, I was exposed to many great designers and artists and I eventually landed in the home industry. I realized my dream of owning my own design and fabric shop with my Mom, a master seamstress. The yearning to begin painting was always on my mind but I never had the time or opportunity to begin. It was something I would do “someday”.
Artist Statment
The inspiration for my expressive abstract paintings comes from the young students I work with as an early childhood educator. Watching them pick up paintbrushes and paint without any inhibitions gave me the courage to begin painting and I began approaching my own work with more freedom and curiosity. Children are natural artists who create amazing abstract paintings without any effort. They taught me to be carefree, playful, and to stay in the moment. These concepts have influenced the way I create my art. My best work comes from letting my paintings unfold naturally without too much thought. My marks are loose, expressive, and free and this helps me get to a place of flow.
My work with children is about play and discovery. Play keeps us connected to our human spirit and helps us arrive at a place of creation and beauty. In my current artwork, experimentation and discovery are how I incorporate play into my creative process. I primarily work in three modalities; acrylics, digital painting, and photography. Using these mediums collaboratively allows me to push the boundaries and to be the most expressive and experimental. Each medium informs the other. You will find glimpses of my paintings in my photography and the influences of my photography in my art. I combine the two with my digital paintings. Creating imaginative serene art transports me to a place where I lose myself and forget everything. My intention is to bring you there as well.
